Barbershop Isn’t Just for Men Any More!
Melanie Hansen helped the Lamplighter Chorus—and the Barbershop Harmony Society of which it is a part—make history in 2018, 2019 and again in 2020.
In the summer of 2018, after 80 years of being an all-male singing organization, the Barbershop Harmony Society broke tradition and started allowing women to sing with them. Then, in January of 2019, women were allowed official membership status within The Society.
Not all local chapters of the Barbershop Harmony Society were ready to embrace change, but the Lamplighter Chorus was (and is) very open and welcoming to women.
Melanie started singing with the Lamplighter Chorus in August of 2018, making it a group consisting of 12 men and Melanie as the lone woman. Then, in January of 2019, Melanie joined the Barbershop Harmony Society, making the Lamplighter Chorus one of the Barbershop Harmony Society’s newest mixed choruses.
Finally, in January of 2020, Melanie became the President of the Lamplighter Chorus, putting the Aurora, IL, Chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society into the history books as having one of the very first female Presidents!
Melanie will always hold fond memories of her time in Lamplighter Chorus, and she urges anyone and everyone—male or female—to keep barbershop singing alive and well by joining a local chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society!
